And, for a more authentic, less touristy escape, Portland Parish is the part of the island you should consider visiting. First off, the drive along the coast to Kanopi House is an experience in itself. You’ll travel a scenic route that winds its way through lush tropical vegetation, vibrant towns, rolling hills, and breathtaking coastal views, into the parish of Portland. Portland has always been my favourite Parish in Jamaica because of its beauty; it offers lush rainforests, secluded beaches, and a tranquil atmosphere that is worlds away from the bustling tourist hubs.
Arriving at Kanopi House I was immediately taken by Kanopi House’s natural splendor. Nestled within the treetops of the rainforest and overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the eco-chic design of the property perfectly blends with the surroundings. The warm and friendly staff greeted me with the famous Jamaican hospitality and offered me a strong, fruity rum punch that I sipped on while taking in the gorgeous views of the famous Blue Lagoon from the main dining room and reception area.

The accommodations at Kanopi house are a collection of luxe treehouses built into the rainforest, all overlooking Jamaica’s famous Blue Lagoon. Each treehouse is thoughtfully designed with locally sourced materials, boasting rustic charm and modern comforts. The treehouse I stayed in with my family was called “Spanish Elm” and it had a comfortable living room, kitchenette, dining area, a large outdoor terrace, and an outdoor shower. Waking up to the gentle sway of the trees and the sound of the birds chirping, and then having coffee on the terrace overlooking the rainforest was a truly magical experience.

For me, the biggest highlight of staying at Kanopi House was having direct access to the Blue Lagoon. The hotel offers all guests access to complimentary kayaks, so you can paddle the lagoon and go swimming, visit the mineral pool, and then venture over to Monkey island where there is a swing and small beach area, which you will likely have all to yourself! After exploring the lagoon, you can relax on the loungers at the deck that overlooks the lagoon and then if you feel like it, go for another swim.
Kanopi House encourages you to explore the local community and embrace the island’s culture fully. The hotel organizes guided tours to nearby attractions, such as the mystical Reach Falls or to go bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande. There are also opportunities for visiting local beaches like Winnifred’s (which is only a 12 min drive away), to go hiking, cycling, or snorkeling, or to go out at night to visit a local bar or to enjoy the local reggae music scene.

Kanopi House also offers the opportunity to savor authentic Jamaican cuisine. The on-site restaurant serves up delectable dishes prepared with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients bursting with flavor. From jerk chicken for dinner to ackee and saltfish with breadfruit for breakfast, each bite was a delightful celebration of Jamaica’s culinary heritage. The menu changes daily so you can enjoy a variety of traditional dishes and flavors during your stay!
